Nursery Plants For Upstate SC

Twin Bridge has a large selection of quality nursery plants from reputable growers, both local, and throughout the southeast. Whether you're looking for ground cover, ornamental grasses, perennial plants or annuals, our experienced staff can help you select what's best for you.

One of the first things to contend with when shopping for landscape and garden plants is to understand the difference between perennials and annuals. Perennials will normally last for years and don't have wood branches like trees and shrubs. They may keep their foliage year around, or they might go dormant in the winter and come back in spring.

Annuals are once and done. They flourish for the growing season, and then they die. Some annuals are self seeding, and new plants will come up in the spring.

Annuals vs Perennials

Advantages of Annuals

Mandevilla Vine In Container With Pink Flowers
  • Lower initial cost.

  • Do something different every year.

  • Some people think they're more flowery.

Advantages of Perennials

Verbena Plants With Purple Flowers On A Table
  • Don't buy new plants every year (but they cost more).

  • Less work replanting.

  • Some have foliage year around.

The next thing to be concerned about is sun or shade, or partial sun. Where are you planting? Will you have a softer morning sun, or a hot afternoon sun. Drought tolerant perennials withstand afternoon sun quite well.

Another possibility is a container plant. Many nursery plants can be kept in containers and placed on a deck or porch. You're open to tropical plants that can't survive our zone 7 winters. Simply bring the container indoors, but check for insects first. The life of some annuals can be extended by keeping them in containers and bringing them inside for the winter.

Twin Bridge Nursery has many options to choose from that work well in upstate South Carolina. Some of the more popular items include ground cover plants, ornamental grasses, and ferns.

Ornamental Grasses

Several Different Ornamental Grasses Lined Up In Pots

We carry a wide variety of ornamental grasses, which are perennials. Dwarf and shorter varieties are a very popular choice as a border. You see them used at the edge of a garden or flower bed and around ponds or in rock gardens. Planting along a driveway is also popular.

Taller grasses can be used to compliment and accent shrubs that you place in a defined bed. The largest ornamental grasses can used as a center piece in a small bed. This is a popular use for pampas grass in our area.

Ornamental grasses we generally have stock:

  • Hamelin (or Hameln) Dwarf
  • Liriope
  • Maiden Grass
  • Pampas Grass
  • Ruby Slippers Switch Grass
  • ... and much more ...

Ground Cover Plants

Ground cover plants are good for filling in between shrubs and trees. They're normally low growing and spread easily. It's a good solution for erosion control. They do not handle foot traffic well.

Before installing ground cover plants, get your weeds under control. While a thick, healthy ground cover will hold back weeds, it doesn't eliminate them. You'll have to do a little maintenance.

Some of our ground cover plants include:

  • Ajuga
  • Blue Star Creeper
  • Vinca Major
  • Vinca Minor

Twin Bridge Nursery is the place to go for ferns in the Greenville SC area. You'll find our wide selection in the front greenhouse at the main entrance. We'll normally stock some ferns in hanging baskets right before Mother's Day in May.

In general, although there are a few ferns that do well in sun, most hardy fern will do well in shady areas where other plants won't grow. There are so many different textures and shades of green, they compliment other plants and shrubs quite nicely.

Some of the ferns you'll usually find in our inventory:

  • Arborvitae Fern
  • Autumn
  • Foxtail
  • Heather
  • Holly Fern
